Van Gogh´s portrait of Dr. Gachet symbolically depicts the image of a man (subject matter) wearing a strong dark blue colored coat and looking rather unsatisfied and in despair against a blue background. Blue color reflects the sad and depressed image of the doctor whose right arm rests on a small pile of books while in front of him a plant, probably medicinal as a way of expressing the unanswered problems of attaining cures. Van Gogh applies his brush strokes in a painterly style revealing and emphasizing a  crooked arched shoulder, a defeated and down-throudened look of Dr. Gachet.

Van Gogh was one of the founders of post-impressionist, a predominantly French art movement that began in the late nineteenth century to about early twentieth century.
