Rain is usually the main source of water in a desert, but it falls very rarely. Many desert dwellers rely on groundwater, stored in aquifers below the surface. Groundwater comes from rain or other precipitation, like snow or hail. It seeps into the ground, where it can remain for thousands of years. The easiest way to find water in the desert is to follow any birds or bees to a location that might have water, like a shaded canyon or valley. Once you've found a likely spot, dig 1 foot into the soil in the early morning, and wait for the area to get damp. A full grown saguaro cactus can hold as much as 201 gallons (760 liters) of water. Because it is so close to the ocean, the Sonoran Desert receives more rain than any other desert, about 10 to 14 inches (25 to 35 cm) a year. One example of people who live in the desert is the Bedouin tribe... They have herds of animals which are adapted to living in desert conditions, such as camels. Their tents are built to allow air to circulate within them, keeping them cool.
