He showed that the development of all vegetable tissues comes from the activity of cells. He stated that structures and morphological features, not processes, give organic life its character.
He also proved that a nucleated cell is the first part of the plant embryo.

Cell theory:
1. All life comes from one or more cells.
2. A cell is the smallest form of life.
3. Cells come only from other cells.
