solution: because the diameter of a strand of floss is greater than the the diameter of a strand of rope.

so, we need to find the differences of diameters of strand of rope and from   the diameter of a strand of floss.

in order to find the difference, we need to subtract those two diameters.

difference in diameters = 2.0 x inches - 1.2 x inches

                                        = 0.8 x inches.

therefore, we can say the diameter of the strand of rope is 0.8 x inches longer than the diameter of the strand of floss.
