The Stamp Act was a tax put on the American colonies by the British in 1765. It said they had to pay a tax on all sorts of printed materials such as newspapers, magazines and legal documents. It was called the Stamp Act because the colonies were supposed to buy paper from Britain that had an official stamp on it that showed they had paid the tax.

The Stamp Act of 1765 was a tax to help the British pay for the French and Indian War. The British felt they were well justified in charging this tax because the colonies were receiving the benefit of the British troops and needed to help pay for the expense. The colonists didn't feel the same.

Why is King disappointed with the church leaders upon his arrival to Birmingham? King was disappointed with church leaders because of the lack of support received from them. He wanted change in Birmingham and being a Godly man, he thought that the church would be his foundation of support. He was very surprised when he found out they would not speak up in his defense. King was eager to endure any punishment for his views as long as he had support from the church. As he was writing this letter, he mentioned the church, “I hope the church as a whole will meet the challenge of this decisive hour. But even if the church does not come to the aid of justice, I have no despair about the future. I have no fear about the outcome ofour struggle in Birmingham….” King had hope for the church but he does not show any loss of hope for the outcome of Birmingham. Also, stated in the letter was: “I had hoped that each of you would understand. But again I have been disappointed.” King had faith in the church, because the church was supposed to show Christianity and justice, but they let him down. What is he
