The center of medieval life in western Europe was the church. Church was the center of community activities. Religious services were held several times in a day at the church and plays and concerts took place there.  

Shops were set up by merchants around the church. Farmers sold their products at the church square. Markets, festivals and fairs were held at locations around the church. Thus the church was became a cultural centre in Europe.
